Biography
Started at school in 1990 - original line up was Matt Parry on vocals, Doug Martin on bass and backing vocals, Martin Johnston & John Gibbs on guitars, and James Smith-Pryor on drums. The name came about with Doug and Matt larking
about in class, taking the piss out of a band called "Iron Eagle. “Frankly, it was so cheezoid, they clearly needed a good piss take, so it was down to us.
After going through Tin Bunny, Ceramic Elephant and gawd knows what else, Matt came up with the flawed genius that is Konkrete Gerbil.
I wrote a few songs, and we put the rest of the set together from badly played Motorhead and AC/DC songs. Played a few gigs at school and loved it. We had a few outdoor gigs booked, and Martin wasn't allowed to play with us anymore (Bless!) so Pete Chapman was drafted in to play instead. A few gigs, and a few more songs down the line, John decides we're just too damn noisy for him, so he leaves (Wise!)
We carry on as a four piece for a wee while, we record a frankly fairly ropey demo, then Pete wants out. Adverts placed in Kerrang!, and enter Kev Fisher and Stu Johnson.Some of the best songs are kept. (Sentenced, Powersurge, etc.)
Kev, Doug and Matt then proceed to write an entirely new set of originals, with not a cover in sight. Bargain! We then go out, play a shed load of gigs, record a few rehearsal demos, then James spits his dummy and has a punch up with Kev. All the above is early 1991. Enter Steve Johnson on drums.
Despite the brothers' constant rucks, the line up works well, and after the usual trio write even more songs, we go out and kick some serious arse. The band gets good enough live that no bugger'll let them support anymore - losers. Fuck it, we'll headline then.
God knows how many dives we end up in, but it's fun. Headline the Marquee a couple of times, the Standard loads, all over the place really. 1992 - a good year for KG. We're all over the place, picking up some very loyal fans in the process - our own private moshpit!
1993 comes, and cracks are starting to show. 2 promised and
failed record deals, and a shitbox of a supposed management deal, and the band are on a bit of a low.
The songwriters in the band want to broaden out a bit,
but opposition within the band, coupled with a few personal differences and a bit of indifference from the thrash metal scene leads to the band folding up in late 1993. Final gig at the Standard sees Matt shoot us all, just to ram the point home.
Doug, Kev and Matt go on to form Chronic, swiftly renamed Lump.
Ironically, it was quite nu-metal, long before that term came out. Good songs, but a little too ahead of its time for its own good. How's that for poxy irony?

Saw the Gerbil too many times down The Standard, were some good nights. Think familiarity bred contempt later and got sick to the back teeth of you haha
I think my drummer Jo Carr might have sort of done some attempted management for Chronic/Lump, she worked a bit with some band and said they were ex-KG members. Had video of some guys trying clothes on up Camden that I think was you lot
Anyway, thanks for some good to ok, to annoying nights up The Standard \m/
